Two Reflective Teachers: Close Reading and Literary Essays: Part 2

As a first-year writing course, this class is designed to teach you strategies for analyzing and crafting effective arguments. Our goals are: (1) to learn how to read attentively and understand how various kinds of texts—essays, films, fictions—persuade us of their point of view, (2) to develop strategies for writing our own texts, and (3) to cultivate critical thinking skills. On a typical day, we will discuss our reactions to a conspiracy text, identify the rhetorical strategies the text uses, and then try out some these strategies in an exercise. Over the course of the term we will generate a number of lists—ways to appeal to our audience, effective strategies for opening and closing an essay, methods for organizing evidence, things to look for while revising, techniques for enlivening our prose, etc. By the end of the course, you should have a new appreciation for how texts work, how to make your own work better, and probably a suspicion of everything around you.
