We requested a term paper for a university-level social psychology class, 12 pages long, using 15 sources (cited and referenced in a bibliography). The paper was to conform to American Psychological Assn. style guidelines and needed to be completed in the next two weeks. All four of the essay mills agreed to provide such a paper, charging us in advance, between $150 and $216 for the paper.

Professors in general are concerned about essay mills and their effect on learning, but not knowing exactly what they provide, I wasn't sure how concerned to be. So together with my lab manager Aline Grüneisen, I decided to check the services out. We ordered a typical college term paper from four different essay mills. The topic of the paper? Cheating.Whilst the nurses had reason to associate with have been hard working and a credit to their profession, there is an underclass of potential nurses who do resort to cheating and plagiarism. The wider research I’ve been involved in with Robert Clarke has shown a wide range of services appearing to help students. Many of these services are optimised purely to help nurses, including essay mills and contract cheating sites offering to write nursing essays and produce nursing assignments.It's comforting in a way that the technological revolution has not yet solved students' problems. They still have no other option but to actually work on their papers (or maybe cheat in the old-fashioned way and copy from friends). But I do worry about the existence of essay mills and the signal that they send to our students.In 1997, BU took a legal shot at the paper mills after several students in a summer session turned in essays purchased online. The University hired a law clerk and a paralegal to pose as students seeking papers. Once the “undergrads” received the prepared essays, complete with course number and professor’s name on the title page, BU filed a federal lawsuit against eight essay mills in several different states, arguing that their services devalued the University’s degree programs and constituted mail and wire fraud. The suit was dismissed for procedural reasons in 1998, but Massachusetts has since made it illegal to sell research material for academic credit. In response, many sites post disclaimers that their content is for informational or comparison purposes only.
