As parents, we help our students select high school courses, we help with SAT preparation, we make college visits, and read college essays. We fill out finance forms and health forms, pack our cars, and help decorate dorm rooms. But then we cross our fingers and hope it all turns out well. Don’t leave college success to chance! Help students think about how to prepare for a successful beginning, how to manage themselves and their time, and how to navigate their new environment and new role.
I asked students to re-read their college admissions essays and answer the following questions: What was it about, what about it made you cringe and how have you changed? Some are funny, some are serious and one interviewee asked that I protect her privacy with anonymity.
