June 1—Peace: Submissions are due for the 2001Swackhamer Peace Essay Contest, for high school students, sponsored bythe Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, an international educationalorganization. Students must submit essays of 800 to 1,200 words on thetheme "Your choice for the most important peace hero of the 20thcentury," supporting their choices and describing the qualities thatmake the person selected a peace hero. The first-, second-, andthird-place winners will receive $1,500, $1,000, and $500,respectively. Youth Empowerment Initiative’s activities include the Barbara Mandigo Peace Poetry Contest, the Internship and Volunteer programs, and over a dozen Peace Leadership trainings.
