Anyone writing a statement of purpose graduate school knows that a transition in an essay connects the ideas of one paragraph to the next one that follows. Transitions, however, often seem contrived in contemporary writing. It is a simple idea to continue one paragraph from where the previous one ended. The simplicity lies in the concept and not the execution.
Purpose: This activity should help students identify effective and creative transitions in the essay by restructuring the final draft. It should also show them how to allow the connecting ideas to serve as the transition in an essay vs. only using one-word transitions. Use with “Adaptations, Limitations, and Imitations,” OOW 2006-2007.
